It's been known that horses ran wild for centuries before mankind discovered them. The first domesticated horses go back to Asia during about 3000 to 4000 B.C. Obviously, currently they were used for meat, and it wasn't until later that they were utilized as working animals that could pull people and cargo. There are various different horse breeds, and most come from various parts of the world. These breeds have adapted and changed with time. There are about 500 different horse breeds worldwide.

Generally, in order to be classified in this list, the horse must be 14.2 hands tall or more. Anything smaller or shorter is regarded as a pony breed. Believe it or not, there are several horse breeds which are now extinct. Many of those include the Irish hobby, the Norfolk trotter, the Chapman horse, and the Poznan, only to mention a few. Almost all these breeds were developed by humans, which can also explain the reason behind the extinction. Horses are natural animals, and are meant to exist naturally. If humans step in and try to create their very own breed, the chances are that the horse will ultimately cease to exist.

Most horse breeds are categorized by continent. It is rare to find and African breed roaming around in Europe for instance. Just like other animals, horses are usually indigenous to the land they originally came from, and so the breeds usually remain in their particular continent. In Kentucky, there's a museum dedicated to honoring all the many beautiful horse breeds of the world. For fans of horses, this is a must see. Observing and understand the hundreds of horse breeds from around the globe makes one truly appreciate the grace and beauty of those large and mysterious animals.
